In the traditional card stab a knife is thrust into the deck, ending up adjacent to a chosen card (or between two chosen cards). At some point an inventive mind thought of substituting a playing card for the knife. The effect became known as The Magic Thrust; developments on the theme proceeded rapidly thereafter.
